Egg yolk on the ground ...

Updated: Nov 16, 2024

The highlight of our stay in Esperance was a 60 minute flight on Tuesday morning.

We took off just before 9am with a circuit over Esperance and the harbour before heading along the coast, taking in many of the islands.

There are 105 named islands as well as over 1200 unnamed small rocky islands  often referred to as óbstacles to shipping’ located in the Recherche Archipelago of the coast of Esperance.

We then headed inland to see the coloured lakes.

There used to be a large pink lake just outside Esperance. However, it is no longer pink ... and nobody knows why! Our pilot explained that it may be that the road that dvides the lake is impeding water flow or perhaps climate change or a myriad of other theories ...

There are however a number of smaller coloured lakes all located on private property that are only visible from the air.

The number of these lakes was incredible and they certainly have an array of colours. The same as the pink lakes we saw outside Denham the colour is due to the algae in the salty water.

The yellow changed intensity as we flew over it - seemingly to change with the clouds.

Today we head out to Cape Le Grand National Park, 60kms east of Esperance where we will be camping at Lucky Bay. In 2023, Lucky Bay was voted number 1 in the world’s 50 best beaches list. The pristine snow-white sand and turquoise water healped secure the number 1 ranking.

Yesterday we flew over Lucky Bay, tonight we will be camping there!  Lucky Bay is our final couple of nights camping in this beautiful part of WA.

After Lucky Bay we will head back to Esperance, travel 260kms north to Noresman before turning right and starting our trip across the Nullarbor.
